Subject: watching quackwatch

Doug posted an abstract (http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=24318)
referring to the Los Angeles Gerontology Research Group. David noted
that a cofounder (L. Stephen Coles) is listed in quackwatch
(http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=24320,
http://www.quackwatch.org/11Ind/jlradvisors.html).

Quackwatch is a website opearted by physician Stephen Barrett,
who is also author of many popular books.

I would caution that Stephen B also considers cryonics to be quackery
(http://www.quackwatch.org/04ConsumerEducation/QA/cryonics.html),
although he hasn't investigated it carefully enough to even get the
prices right (his reports that it's $28,000 to freeze a head but
$120,000 to freeze a body). [He does however include links to CI and
Alcor, so that's a point in his favor.]

He also disses Linus Pauling
(http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/pauling.html)
for his advocacy of vitamin C, so i guess we're in good company.

I don't mean to imply that everything he says is wrong, but
some of it certainly is.
