Thanks to Henri Kluytmans (in message #25539) for a superior
articulation of the argument I've been trying to make on the identity
issue.

Quite coincidentally, an episode of "Enterprise" (i.e. Star Trek - the
early years) titled 'Daedalus' aired last night that featured the
character who invented the transporter, Emory Erikson. At one point in
the show, he was discussing the history of it all. I wish I had the
actual dialogue, but he mentioned that there were those who believed
that the person appearing at the other end wasn't the original that
stepped into the transporter. I think he used the word "mysticism" to
describe that view.

I also remember the identity issue being addressed very briefly by Jeff
Goldblum's character (Seth Brundle) in "The Fly" immediately after his
first transportation. He spoke to the Baboon, saying, "Is it me... or
is it Memorex?".

Best regards,

Scott
