X-Message-Number: 25602 Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2005 10:17:05 -0800 (PST) From: Doug Skrecky <> Subject: 163'rd update on fly longevity experiments This is the 163'rd update of my fly longevity experiments. Average temperature was 21.9 C during this run. Estimated maximal longevity using the formula (363 - T*11.2) is 118 days. Aspirin improved fly survival in one published experiment, but did nothing in a follow-up test. The difference was attributed to poor pathogen control in the earlier experiment. In run #130 of my own experiments 81 mg aspirin was beneficial, while a higher dosage proved to be toxic. Here I look at more modest doses of aspirin. Again the 81 mg dosage was helpful, but no conclusions could be drawn regarding lower dosages. Salix alba contains aspirin-like substances, but provided no statistically significant benefit at the dosages tested. However one fly fed salix alba did break the previous record longevity of 129 days, set by marmite in run #134. Although this new record may be little more than luck, run #176 is currently giving salix alba a chance to prove it wasn't a one-fly wonder.
