X-Message-Number: 25896 From: "Bruce Waugh" <> Subject: Why I support the Cryonics Society Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2005 16:12:19 -0500 I want to set out why I support the Cryonics Society and agreed to become a Director of it. I believe that if cryonics is going to flourish, then acceptance by the general public is a necessity. I believe that the reasonableness and fundamental humanity of cryonics can be accepted and supported by society, especially if an active effort is made. And I know such efforts are best made by people with professional experience. My experience with the Cryonics Society of Canada showed me that it was possible for people in our cryonics community to come from different backgrounds and belong to different providers and organizations, and yet work together effectively for everyone s greater good. Everyone who supports cryonics can come together amiably and fruitfully. I ve seen it happen. I believe this can best occur if there is a single umbrella organization that works to further the interests of everyone. I support the Cryonics Society because I support Alcor, and CI, and SA, and every legitimate cryonics provider. I know that finding new members, reaching out to the public, raising funds, and gaining positive media attention takes time and hard work. The resources of cryonics providers are not limitless. The Cryonics Society would lift part of this burden from their shoulders, and enable them to concentrate on more pressing tasks. It would work to help them get more memberships and funding, and allow them to focus the funds and personnel they have on other important projects. Thanks to vitrification, tissues in cryonics need no longer be frozen. But when it comes to dealing with the public on whom our future survival rests, the ways in which we present ourselves seem frozen. Forty years of taking cryonics to the public has resulted in barely over a thousand members, and brought us bureaucratic oversight and legislation. We need to make a new effort. Nick Pavlica and David Pascal are personally committed cryonics. They have backgrounds in marketing. I ve known them for several years, and I look forward to working with them. They have asked me to contribute to the effort they and others in the Cryonics Society are trying to make, and I am very glad to accept. The goals of the Cryonics Society are compassionate and admirable. I m very proud to be a part of it as a Director and also a member. I strongly urge everyone reading this to become a member too, and to help the Cryonics Society in its efforts on behalf of us all. - Bruce Waugh Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=25896
