X-Message-Number: 2622 From: (Thomas Donaldson) Subject: CRYONICS: re #2619-2620 Date: Tue, 22 Feb 1994 09:08:16 -0800 (PST) Hi again! If Paul Wakfer can really manage to work on brain cryopreservation I'll become far overjoyed. One problem for many years seems to be that cryonicists have been bushwacked by other problems: legal, personal, political, you name it ... and all the while some very promising fields of research have lain fallow. Not only have they been neglected, but even worse, they may in the end turn out to be far more crucial to our survival than any amount of work on the other sides of cryonics...including the politics, too. I am involved in cryonics myself because I think it has a significant chance of working. But there IS a major problem, of brain repair after storage in LN temperatures. That MAY cause enough destruction to obscure the circuitry for ALL our memories ... which means that even if they revive us, we'll remember nothing and know nothing, just as if we were clones. That is, we will die. I'm not saying that this problem is certain, even now; but right now we can't really PROVE anything to the contrary. But if we could be stored in vitrified state, this entire issue disappears. And certainly, if Paul does manage to do research on brain cryopreservation, I'm sure that the editorial board of NEUROCRYOBIOLOGY will receive his paper with great interest.
