Average temperature was 23.9 C during this run. Estimated maximal longevity using the formula (363 - T*11.2) is 95 days. As part of a standard screening process, I like to check anything that exerts neuroprotective effects in any animal species. Spirulina algae has effectively blocked brain aging in Fisher 344 rats. (J Neuroscience 22(14): 6114-6120) Hence here I test a variety of algae. Alas, neither chlorella nor spirulina algae offered any benefit. The middle (1/4 tsp) dose of blue-green algae appeared to offer some benefit on average, but not maximum longevity. However this may have been due to chance. A wide variety of antioxident rich foods (apples, blueberrys, spinach, spirulina, strawberrys) have slowed or even halted brain aging according to various criteria in rodents. It is possible that this may merely reflect how poor the control commercial rodent chow is. In any case I have consistently found no longevity benefit for such foods when they are mixed with 4-24 fly food.
