Average temperature was 25.8 C during this run. Estimated maximal longevity using the formula (363 - T*11.2) is 74 days. Lovastatin is a prescription only item. However it is also found in fermented red yeast rice extracts, which are available OTC, probably because they are a dilute source of lovastatin. Nonetheless red yeast rice by itself was recently banned in Canada, although it is available for the time being in combination products. One such combination still has a fairly hefty amount of red yeast rice, plus only minor additions of guggulipid and artichoke. Since previous testing indicated that neither of these additives was toxic to flies, I decided to try testing this red yeast rice product [by Organika). Alas, red yeast rice had no impact on fly survival at any dose. I interpret this to mean that lovastatin, and by extension all other statins at low doses would likely also have no effect on fly survival. On the plus side, it does appear that this red yeast rice product is completely non-toxic.
