Successful preservation of sheep ovaries may have implications for humans

In an attempt to preserve the fertility of women undergoing chemotherapy,
researchers at Israel's Institute of Animal Science have successfully frozen and
transplanted whole sheep ovaries, a technique they believe could one day be
applied to humans.

Chemotherapy often causes women to lose the ability to have children and
previous efforts at preserving fertility by freezing fertilized eggs or strips
of ovary tissue have met with only limited success.

In the current study, of eight frozen ovaries, five were successfully
transplanted and two produced eggs.

Several reports, including a BBC News report, do not mention the method used to
prevent damage caused by ice crystals, raising questions about how the
researchers preserved the viability of the transplanted tissue.

The implications for cryonics, particularly neuropreservation, thus remain
unknown, though this does seem an encouraging development.
