X-Message-Number: 2755 From: Date: Sat, 14 May 94 16:09:18 EDT Subject: CRYONICS bauge By now probably some of you have heard from Trygve Bauge, who called me this morning from Oslo. According to him, the situation is as follows: The town of Nederland, Colorado (where he has his newly built house and the sheds with the two patients in dry ice) originally demanded that he "sign off" within 24 hours, agreeing to move the patients, or else they would seize them. They backed off their ultimatums, but now another town meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, when they may vote to ban cryonics in their town. If this happens, Trygve may be grandfathered in (excepted from the law) but no new facilities or patients would be allowed. He asks for whatever assistance anyone can provide to dissuade the locals from this, or to help with his legal fees. He says he could move his facility to Boulder, which would not object, but he doesn't want to do that, having already built his home in Nederland, and of course we want to avoid a precedent of local authorities banning cryonics. Meanwhile, he says there has been tremendous media coverage in Norway, mostly favorable. We have independent confirmation of tremendous media coverage--how favorable we don't presently know. Trygve says he is in fact working out of the office of a TV station (if I understood him correctly). He says Norwegian authorities have said cryonics facilitities (or at least his facility) would be welcome in Norway, no permit required. He suggests that cryonics organizations here might exploit the opportunity to open branches in Norway. He gives the following telephone and e-mail numbers for those who want to inquire or to help. I hope I have these right.. At the same time, Mae and I feel we should give him some kind of support, and plan to contribute some money to his legal expenses.. He thinks (initial?) legal expenses may run $5,000.
