He was originally given a death sentence by his doctors many years ago, after being diagnosed with brain cancer. As an ardent life-extensionist, Thomas managed to beat the odds, and live a lot longer than his doctors originally thought possible. Even now he continues to defy the odds. Although some might regard his cryonics arrangement as akin to freezing a corpse (corpiscle), there's another possibility that I'm sure Thomas was well aware of.
