The basis of all this is "negative refractive index" which if anyone had 
suggested it seriously in the 1970s, he would have been considered a crank. 
It enables optical lenses and other components with properties previously 
thought as impossible as perpetual motion.

This shows that limitations such as the wavelengths in the visible spectrum 
of light don't pose the barriers to optics that were previously supposed. It 
is on these sorts of changes in what was previously thought of as impossible 
that cryonicists rely.
