I have now received a reply from my cousin which I will post here for the 
record (I don't think she will mind):

Thanks for defending the 70s iconic dome houses! Yes, we still live in
mine, it is still structural, leaks no more than ever, and serves an
excellent job as a second skull for protection against falling trees. Also
it is relatively fireproof and did not need foundations for structual
reasons ...though it has sunk a bit.
