Subject: CRYONICS sheep rationale

Perhaps I should have mentioned how the Cryonics Institute chose the
procedure we used for the sheep heads.

We knew we wanted to try slow heat flow, but we also wanted to choose a
reasonable washout/perfusion procedure, with as few variables as possible.
(We didn't trust anybody's reports or recommendations, and we wanted to
confuse the picture as little as possible.) We looked primarily for minimum
edema and maximum uptake of glycerol.

We found that most of the chemical additives recommended made no perceptible
difference, except mannitol, which did tend to reduce edema. We also found
that an initial high concentration of glycerol seemed to do better than
ramping up....Naturally, all these things could be discussed at great length,
but in a nutshell this was our rationale.
