X-Message-Number: 29570 Subject: Re: [CN] Sam Harris is brilliant, one of the finest thinkers ... From: "Fred C. Moulton" <> References: <> Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2007 23:26:09 -0700 When I first saw Rudi's post I was afraid that of the aftermath. First there were replies which were simply not well informed. We should each maintain high standards for our posts to Cryonet. Do some simple thinking and research before posting. For reasons below I will give only one example: the comment that "Sam Harris appears to have an irrational acceptance of Buddhism" is not just wrong; it is egregiously wrong. All one needs to do is use a search engine and you will find this: http://www.samharris.org/media/killing-the-buddha.pdf Second point is that while I think that Rudi has correctly identified some of the more interesting writers on the subject I am not sure that this forum is ready for that topic yet. In the past my perception was that issues of religion and faith were swept under the rug so as not to offend anyone and to maintain the public face Cryonics was not a threat to religion. What we need to consider before we discuss the details of Harris, Dawkins and Dennett is if this the time and place for the discussion. Although the general topics of faith and religion are ones that I read about and thought about over the years and about which I have some fairly strong views I am not sure that Cryonet is the best place for the discussion. One big reason is that these discussions can be long and heated and I expect that there are a lot of people on Cryonet who are not interested. It seems to me a specialized mailing list and/or discussion forum would be a more appropriate setting. Ideally one that is private so that it will not be picked up by search engines.
