Smith, a Specialist In Preserving Cells, Is Dead at 66 Dr. Audrey U. Smith, who conducted extensive research into cell preservation techniques as an associate of Britain's National Institute for Medical Research, died Wednesday in London, where she lived. She was 66 years old. Dr. Smith, who was born in India and who studied medicine in England, recommended the use of glycerol to protect human red blood cells from freezing. Currently, the technique is used extensively in the United States to preserve such cells for transfusion. Her work in the development of techniques to protect frozen sperm cells from bulls has been credited with contributing to major advances in cattle breeding and animal husbandry. At a 1958 conference on hypothermia, or low body temperatures, sponsored by the New York Academy of Sciences, Dr. Smith discussed an experiment in which monkeys refrigerated until their blood froze were revived and lived as long as 18 hours after being warmed to normal temperatures.
