Treatment isn't risk free, and the subjects of such studies would need to be
given figures of the risk between not treating it and treating it. If
airlines were run like hospitals, one jumbo jet would crash every week.

Although health authorities around the world are working to reduce this
appalling statistical comparison, the public would probably be unwilling to
pay for hospitals that had the same safety criteria as airlines.

has caused quite a stir in suggesting diet changes to reduce the risk of
cancer. However one commentator pointed out that the risk of dying in a road
traffic accident is 1 in 60 whereas the risk of getting cancer by consuming
the proscribed foods and drinks is 1 in 100.

The BBC have started a new series of podcasts about statistics on

'Silent' abnormalities lurk within ageing brains
<del>

Van der Lugt says that his team notified only those subjects who had signs
of a brain abnormality with a known risk and treatment, such as cancer and
haemorrhage.
