Re. the paid advertising discussion point:

High 'Cryonics.org' search engine placement in association with keyword
searches, can be accomplished by registering multiple web pages, each
with different content & meta data, and can be crafted to have high
placement in association with related topics on a per page basis, thus
allowing one to profile the page that led to the click-through to
Cryionics.org; e.g. an impact study.

Reciprocal banner advertising for site on a page-specific basis, is also
free. Typically these banner networks have content codes to allow user
profiles to be mined to expose the ads that are most likely to be of use
to the person visiting the site. There are also services focused
entirely on a given topic.

Examples: The use of content in the meta tabs below isn't optimal, and
you'll note that all the pictures at the top of the page generate code
that will dilute the page's content.

Example: This "<title>The Cryonics Institute Home Page</title>" could be
modified to "<title>Immortality: The Cryonics Institute Home
Page</title>", for example, and since no one but search engines read it
(I rarely glace at the changing title bar in IE), it won't impact the
page content or the impression one gets, but it will snag key word
searches for "immortality".

There are very good books on high search engine placement, which would
improve your main (perhaps only, other than word of mouth) source of
clients.

All this can be done by a high school student for pennies; it's basic
HTML search engine tactics.

Also, for example,

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLR,GGLR:2
006-04,GGLR:en&q=immortality

Brings your site up via the "Prospects for immortality" reference, but
on page TWO of Google -- so you may want to diddle your code a bit to
get on Google's, page 1.

You can leverage your coding by checking out the SOURCE code for the
sites that come up on PAGE1, and replicate it in your source code. Do
this via "View\Source" in the IE controls at the top of the browser.

Finally, swapping links with those sites that DO have top placement will
have two effects: 1) it will give you a link form their site so their
customers can be your customers, and 2) their link will show on any
searches, giving you additional search engine placement.
