Subject: Cryonicist F.M. Esfandiary on the year 2010
Date: Sun, 23 Dec 2007 08:10:07 -0800

Since we've almost arrived to the year 2008 CE, I thought you'd might like to
read what cryonicist FM-2030 (nee F.M. Esfandiary) wrote back in 1981 about that
far off, mysterious year 2010:

Up-Wing Priorities
http://www.box.net/shared/static/ay9lub60ha.pdf

"Around 2010 the world will be at a new orbit in history. We will translive all
over this planet and the solar sphere-at home everywhere. We will be hyperfluid:
skim on land-swim in the deep oceans-flash across the sky.

"Family will have given way to Universal life. People will linkup/linkout free
of kinship and possessiveness.

"We will stream ahead propelled by a cornucopia of abundance.

"Life expectancy will be indefinite. Disease and disability will nonexist. Death
will be rare and accidental-but not permanent. We will continuously jettison
our obsolescence and grow younger.

"At 2000 plus ten all this will be the norm-hardly considered marvelous."

Yeah, all that will happen just a couple years from now.

In fairness to FM, he did advocate in this article _doing something_ to bring
this situation about, instead of waiting around because of its alleged
inevitablity. He didn't specify plausible paths to get from here to there,
however. (Someone in Cryonics magazine nearly 20 years ago compared FM to a mime
who imitates a laborer digging a ditch: Both the mime and the laborer make the
same movements, but the laborer actually moves the earth and gets the job done):

"The following Up-Wing priorities are interdependent-to advance rapidly in any
one area we must leap ahead in all areas.

"These priorities are accelerators-targeted to speed up our forward thrust to
the first or second decade of the next century. By 2010 we will have splashed
through so many Time shifts that we will need entirely new accelerators.

"Physical Immortality: The most basic and urgent problem facing us is death. All
other human constraints are derivative. Death casts a pall over all of life. So
long as we are terminal we cannot enhance the basic quality of life. So long as
there is death no one is free.

"Accelerators: Slow down aging through genetic/cellular intervention.
Telemonitor every person for continuous protection from internal and external
hazards. Reformat our terminal bodies into versatile telebodies with easy plug
in replacement parts. Facilitate freefly to reduce gravitational wear and tear
and rapidly break away from natural disasters. Provide universal cryonic
suspension in case of unavoidable death.
Spread a Psychology of Immortality-the will to live forever."

And then FM goes on to talk about space colonization, "telespheres," noncommital
polyamory and his other pet ideas.

It looks like we've had to scale back our expectations about life in the 21st
Century since the time FM wrote this piece.

"There was a time before reason and science when my ancestors believed in all
manner of nonsense." (Narim on "Stargate SG-1")
