Subject: To Pizer re: Alcor Board

Dave Pizer, I appreciate your concerns re: the Alcor
Board. We all realize how much work you have put into
cryonics and Alcor.

I have mixed feelings on the subject. On one hand,
having the members elect the board sounds good. I
would like to have some control over Alcor. And as you
pointed out, it might make membership more involved,
and build more community. THis sounds good to me.

I also think that many minds is smarter than just a
few. See the book THE WISDOM OF CROWDS.

However, there is the other side. Your proposal would
also increase the stress level felt by board members.
Having to deal with the desires of the members,
especially the more outspoken and cranky ones, would
make the job of being a director less desirable. We
want the best people we can get. I suspect that we
would get fewer good people if they are forced to deal
with the membership more than they are now. If we
could get a lot more members, we could pay
professionals to do more at Alcor. But we are not at
that level yet.

So, there are always two sides to every story.

Also, I feel some of your comments were a bit too
harsh with respect to how you characterized the
motives fo some board members. I dunno. Maybe you are
right. I have never even been to Alcor.

I do think that most members would vote to just keep
the situation the same.

Alcor management has messed up a bit in the last few
years. But no one is perfect.
