I've read CryoNet for years, but only came over here recently from Cold
Filter to talk to Alcor's board chairman about Alcor's management salaries.

The newspaper analogy fits to a certain extent. It doesn't fit in that a
newspaper is not a discussion forum, and nobody gets to publish articles on
it when they are promoting scams or offbeat political philosophies like
Larouche or telling everyone else how to write. The CryoNet readers have
excluded 2 or 3 people on that basis, merely by giving bad ratings to their
posts. Cold Filter has excluded at least two of the same people, by the
list owner sifting out their IP addresses and moderating posts of
unregistereds.

Beyond that, I think CryoNet goes a bit too far in letting readers rate
posts which can translate to someone actually getting censored because
his/her views on something valid to cryonics are not agreed with by a set of
people.

Cold Filter (http://www.network54.com/Forum/291677/) is my preferred place
of cryonic residence, because I don't really have to be concerned with what
anyone thinks of what I post there. If the owner doesn't like it, all he
will do is holler at me, and he has a couple of times, and once he was
right. But I don't get bumped off by a group of cultish true believers told
what to do by some director.

Personally I think the whole CryoNet rating thing should be scrapped and
replaced by a simple reporting system for posts that people think are spam
or abuse, and Mr. Brown should take a little more active role in reviewing
them and acting on them only if appropriate.

P.S. Regarding newspapers, the writers also get paid, and spam is the norm
in that most of the pages are filled with advertising circled around the
edges by the actual reading material. Yes you could reduce a newspaper to
only 2 or 3 pages just by taking out the spam.
