While this is a minor point in this discussion, I did want to respond to

Charles. I really have been 3-4 weeks behind on my CryoNet reading for quite a

while, and I didn't see Charles's question for several days. And then it took a
while to find the text. It was on Cold Filter as part of a long discussion

held in December 2005 concerning whether Alcor's Directors should be elected by
the membership in general. In private e-mail with me, Charles stated that he
had forgotten this exchange.

Charles's 2005 statement was:

"Second, when half-a-dozen cryonics activists, some with extremely long
memories, wrote the bylaws for CryoCare Foundation, they had an opportunity to

start afresh, basing their work on everything that had been learned from 20+
years
of cryonics. They/we ended up with a hybrid scheme, where some directors
could be elected by members who had passed through a probationary period of, I

think, 2 years. The result? None of the members ever used their electoral power,
so far as I recall--including the members who drafted the bylaws! So, we come
back to a major flaw in all democratic systems: Many people don't bother to

vote. FD himself might not get around to it, even if he was allowed the option."

For those wishing to see the quote in context (the post by Charles included
quite a bit more, including other thoughts NOT supportive of my position),
