This is the old "pore hypothesis" put forward by Gold and suppressed by Big Oil: http://arxiv.org/pdf/physics/9610011 It has been used by the old SU and Russia to great success. About 97 percent of ordinary matter is hydrogen, and carbon is the 4th most abundant element. So, it would be no great surprise if a lot of hydrocarbons were contained by the Earth from its formation. This is thought to be primarily methane. The gas evolves from the interior thru 'pores," that is, small holes in the rock. One theory is that this evolution drives the movement of the continents (crustal plates). There was a test boring in Sweden, not exactly known to be an oil producer, around 1986. Traces of gas were found. There are also places near the Caspian Sea where oil has been bubbling out of the ground for over a 100,000 years, with no end it sight. Large ships have been lost in that area, when a big 'burp' of gas is released from the bottom. Earthquakes and mud volcanos are known to be sources of massive amounts of methane. Since methane is about 14 times more effective than CO2 as a 'greenhouse' gas, all the talk about CO2 produced by man being a threat must be taken with a grain of salt. So, stop worrying about oil running out and 'global warming', these are just distractions from the real problems that we face, which are political. dss David Stodolsky Skype: davidstodolsky Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=30430
