X-Message-Number: 3066 Subject: WorldCon CRYONICS Report From: (Ben Best) Date: Mon, 5 Sep 1994 23:55:00 -0400 The Labour Day Weekend World Science Fiction Convention appears to have been a success on several counts. Keith Lynch, Ben Best, Paul Wakfer and Paul's dog Moose shared a room at the Sheraton Winnipeg. Room Parties held on 4 nights provided the best opportunity for one-on-one conversation about cryonics. This was important for many people to whom cryonics had formerly only been a media oddity, because it provided the reality of personal contact and clarification of misconceptions by discussion and questions. Brian Wowk, Paul Wakfer and Steve Bridge sat on a Cryonics Panel moderated by Ben Best (me). Of the 50 or 60 people in the audience only 2 personally knew someone who had made cryonics arrangements and no audience member had made arrangements themselves. The presentation was good and the audience seemed receptive. At our Dealer's Table we sold quite a few books and gave away a lot of literature. The table also provided us with a meeting place. All of us enjoyed the conviviality and all of us enjoyed the convention itself -- including Paul, who had come to "work for cryonics". With Steve being President of Alcor and Paul, Steve and Ben being CryoCare members there was less conflict than might have been expected. Steve's gregarious personality greatly contributed to this, as well as allowing him to do a disproportionate amount of promotion for Alcor. A very tangible (and perhaps surprising) result is the number of contacts we made with people native to Winnipeg, many of whom seem serious about making cryonics arrangements. Winnipeg may well become the Canadian city with the most cryonicists within the next year. -- Ben Best (ben.best%) Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=3066
