X-Message-Number: 30692 From: Daniel Crevier <> References: <> Subject: atheist millionaires Date: Tue, 08 Apr 2008 10:05:58 -0500 According to the Wikipedia page quoted by Kennita, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_atheism#North_America even though only 0.4% of the US population "positively claim to be atheists", between 5 and 10% "don't believe in a god." Further, there seems to be a fairly strong negative correlation between wealth and religiosity: the richer you are, the more likely you are to be an atheist. http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2007_10/012346.php If say 7.5% of the US population don't believe in a god, then a larger fraction of millionaires should share this opinion. From the general appearance of the curves in the above link, 15% or more (perhaps a lot more) is quite plausible. Assuming 2.5 million American millionaires, as Kennita does, 15% yields 375,000 atheist (or at least unbeliever)millionaires, for which neither religion nor cost should be a disincentive to cryonics. Yet I don't believe that extensive advertizing to that class of people would yield dramatic results: cultural and social disincentives are also very strong.
