X-Message-Number: 3073 Date: 07 Sep 94 01:28:00 EDT From: Mike Darwin <> Subject: SCI.CRYONICS Ken Storey I would like to thank Ken Storey for his posting of the bibliography on overwintering animals. I personally will find it of use and have already ordered some reprints from Loansome Doc which I did not have. For those of you who do not know, Dr. Storey is the world's preeminent expert on overwintering species; particularly the Canadian tree frog who's capacity for freeze tolerance he first documented. I find it both interesting and courageous of Dr. Storey to post to SCI.CRYONICS given the Society for Cryobiology's position regarding cryonics. I also find it commendable. I have met Dr. Storey on two occassions. He is NOT a cryonicist, nor do I think he sympathizes with cryonicists much (or even at all!). However, what he apparently is first and foremost is someone who believes in educating people regardless of whether he agrees with their applications of his knowledge or their philosophy. Many people follow Cryonet and SCI.CRYONICS. Not all are cryonicists and even those who are can be enriched by learning of work such as Dr. Storey's. In fact, if time would allow it, I would be very interested to get a tutorial from Dr. Storey on how tree frogs and other vertebrates achieve what they do. In particular, I have a lot of specfic questions which I would really appreciate the opportunity to ask and have answered. I wish more cryobiologists would realize that education is the name of the game and there is nothing criminal or wrong in teaching people facts or giving them information. Again, my thanks for a genuinely useful post and my hope for more of the same. Mike Darwin Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=3073
