Subject: Fermi paradox

John Clark wrote a post headed "singularity" which should have been headed
"Fermi paradox" or "the great sllence" or some such--the question of why we

haven't obviously been visited by , or had communication from, advanced aliens.

There are a number of good sources for the argument that advanced life is

rare and perhaps unique, namely us. One good book is by Michael H. Hart and Ben
Zuckerman, Extraterrestrials, Where Are They?, Cambridge U. Press, 2000.
Another is Rare Earth by Peter Ward & Donald Brownlee, Springler-Verlag, 2000.
