X-Message-Number: 30875 From: Kennita Watson <> Subject: Re: "Free Ted" page on YouTube Date: Thu, 17 Jul 2008 04:12:02 -0700 "an Arizona cult known as 'Alcorians'" News to me. I certainly hope no cryonicists refer to themselves that way. FTR, the only definition in my dictionary that might fit is "a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister". I don't think Alcor's religious, but it could look that way from outside given that the "practices" are done after what most people regard as death. Unfortunately, if one struck the word "religious", the definition would fit -- 1000 is a "relatively small" number compared to 6 billion, and the video shows that at least some people have "regarded" the "practices" involved in cryonic suspension as "strange or sinister". Sigh. Going beyond the dictionary, there are lots of attributes of a cult that people signed up for cryonics don't share, but to dedicated detractors those attributes don't matter. Sigh again.
