Don't get discouraged quite yet. Retrieving and displaying photographs
on the net can be quite difficult.

By contrast, retrieving and displaying photos using Mosaic is quite easy.
I recently posted the URL of my home page
(ftp://parcftp.xerox.com/pub/merkle/merklesHomePage.html). There's a gif
picture of myself embedded in my home page, and when you examine my home
page with Mosaic it will automatically retrieve the gif file and display it,
along with the properly formatted text, on your screen. Since posting
my URL a few days ago I've had over 30 people download (and presumably
display) this gif file.

I don't attribute this to a vast interest in examining my not-so-remarkable
features, but rather to the extreme ease of looking at this information using
Mosaic. You point and click, and the picture appears.

Making information available on the World Wide Web (WWW) for access by
WWW clients (such as Mosaic) is a rapid and effective way of disseminating
information to a broad audience. Once you've got net access and Mosaic
running on your machine, browsing information on the web is quite easy.
Mosaic is being distributed without charge, and net access is becoming
increasingly common. Use of Mosaic is increasing explosively.
