Download Privacy:

hear no one has requested them, but also not surprized.

Kevin, if you are keeping a detailed enough log for Mike to find this out,
you should announce the fact in your "how to retrieve" boilerplate. Is
there an automatic way for me to find out who's downloaded my cheapfreeze
message? If not, would a subpoena discover their names?

Mike, Edgar's announcement was only a couple of days ago. Carping to the
choir.

Research Money:

A couple of people asked how I arrived at a $5T estimate for the amount
of research money needed to achieve reversable brain cryosuspension.

My original remark was intended as a wry comment on Charles Platt's
call for $5M for the same purpose. I should put in more :-)s.

On a more serious note, I think $5M is way too small, and $5G doubtful.
$5T seems adequate, even if it requires inventing nanotech to succeed.
We'd need a real research plan to get better numbers.

Platt's real message was that the goal is within our collective resources;
I wanted to express another opinion.

[ Rich, concerning "download privacy", I haven't made available any way
for people to retrieve download logs like they can retrieve mailing
list archives, and I don't plan to do so either. (Privacy reasons,
for example.) The best way to find how many people have downloaded
one of your messages is to send private email to me and wait for me
to send the number to you. Sorry, no automation for this.
FYI: My main reasons for logging downloads are (1) to verify that the
CRYOMSG software is secure and (2) to verify that the CRYOMSG software
works (and gets used). So far, nobody has tried to break security by
sending CRYOMSG requests with funny characters in them (and my software
would filter them out even if they did), but I like to verify that
with the log files, too. - KQB ]
