You probably have your system (mail program?
word processor?) preferences set to use "smart
quotes".  Turn that off -- they're not as smart
as they think they are, because they can't tell
if the system on the other end is ASCII-only
("smart quotes" don't fit in the ASCII character
set).  To my eye, the old straight quotes look
fine anyway -- the curvy ones strike me as a
cutesy affectation.  YMMV.

P.S.  If your system is really insistent, you
may have to tell it to use Plain Text instead
of Rich Text.  It's what we on Cryonet get for
insisting on the simplicity of an ASCII-only
mail system.
