Subject: A personal impression of Dr. Sanjay Gupta
Date: Wed, 7 Jan 2009 08:10:29 -0800

I read Dr. Gupta's book a few months back, but I can't access it readily for
reference because I have it buried somewhere in my storage locker.

Between the book and the few times I've seen Dr. Gupta on CNN, I've gotten the
impression of him as a benevolent and cheerful person who seems unconflicted
about the value of human life and its healthy extension. I haven't heard
anything from him suggesting the sour world view and superstitious fears of
hubris expressed by critics of radical life extension.

Dr. Gupta apparently grew up in a household with Hindu traditions. (Wikipedia
says his parents migrated to the U.S. from India to work as engineers in the
auto industry.) He married an Anglo American woman in a Hindu ceremony, for
example. But publicly he presents a humanistic outlook.

"Around 2010 the world will be at a new orbit in history. . . Life expectancy
will be indefinite. Disease and disability will nonexist. Death wll be rare and
accidental -- but not permanent. We will continuously jettison our obsolescence
and grow younger." F.M. Esfandiary, "Up-Wing Priorities" (1981).
