Cognitive and affective consequences of ontological confrontation. In. P. Drenth, J. Sergeant & J. Takens (eds.) European Perspectives in Psychology, Vol. 2 Chichester: Wiley, 1990, 297-301. Abstract The notion that non-religious people emphasize the rewards of living while religious people stress the importance of afterlife after confrontation with death was investigated. There were no significant changes of beliefs with the highly religious subjects. The low religious subjects showed and increase of state anxiety after confrontation with death. Changers of beliefs were not in correspondence with changes of anxiety. The results do not support the notion that these beliefs serve the function of helping the individual to deal with fear of death. David S.
