X-Message-Number: 32111 Date: Thu, 29 Oct 2009 01:55:40 -0400 Subject: self interest in cryonics From: Charles Platt <> While I believe that almost all non-neurotic behavior is self interested, I determined long ago that my main interest in cryonics derives from my anger about other people dying. I have great difficulty accepting the deaths of people whom I care about. The destruction of human beings is an abomination; therefore, any gesture against mortality feels worthwhile to me and lessons my feelings of frustration or depression. My own death worries me less. For example, on the occasions when I have had general anesthesia, I have felt no anxiety related to it. I have also engaged in high-risk activities (which would pretty much eradicate my chance of useful cryopreservation) such as hang gliding, fast driving in dangerous conditions, roofing a building, and so forth. I am extremely worried and unhappy about my aging process, but that is a separate issue which I feel powerless to address significantly. People's motives relating to cryonics may be more complex than they seem. I didn't figure out mine for many years. Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=32111
