Fellow Cryonicists, Among the benefits of living where I do on the "Left Coast" is the recent legalization of the Death With Dignity law. Anyone who has <= 6 months to live can take his life with some drug. What I would like to know is how to co-ordinate my death (assuming that I were a candidate for such an exit) with the Cryonics Institute. Is there some paperwork that I could sign that would have the deanimation team present as I drank my death and avoided months of extreme suffering? As far as I know, I am not dying of any lethal disease. ---Oh, and allow me to insert my own thoughts here. I am fairly sure that many more states in the US will pass the kinds of voluntary suicide laws that we have here in Washington State. Enabling the individual to take control of his death makes sense, as I see it, rather than having the government or religious institutions maintain that control.-- Taking falls are frequent among the elderly who are frail. While my own mother was still living independently in the desert she took any number of tumbles --and was able to get up on her own each time. She wound up living with my sister for the remaining years of her life and died at some unknown hour under hospice care in a critical-care institution. She herself waved off my ideas of having her suspended; if she has been closely monitored and flat-lined, what would the procedure have been then? [This was in Ohio, 2003.] There are two other points worth mentioning in passing, both that I heard on Public BRoadcasting in recent months. The first was from a wizard mathematician who said that, altho he does plan to be suspended, his guesstimate is only around 2% that he will successfully be reanimated. A story that I caught much more recently skeptically pointed out that given the vast changes that can occur in mere days, the odds of having a valid interested in cryonics in 200 years are absurd. (The implicit point was: the idea is nuts; so much bull-feathers.) The two-percent guess seems a bit low ... that is probably due to my having been just a science and math geek for so long. I would be interested in others' thoughts. Nonetheless, I am still interested in being suspended when I have breathed my last! And, dollars-and-cents: best case, with a state-sanctioned suicide at hour NN:MM, could || would someone be here to prep me? cheers, everyone, gary kline -- Gary Kline http://www.thought.org Public Service Unix http://jottings.thought.org http://transfinite.thought.org The 7.79a release of Jottings: http://jottings.thought.org/index.php Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=32524
