According to one of the most successful psychological approaches
today, terror management theory, this is erroneous. The 'instinct' is
always present, but it is suppressed from awareness by cultural myths:

Model of Defense Against Conscious and Unconscious Death-Related
Thoughts. An Extension of Terror Management Theory. Psychological

review. Psychological Bulletin, 130, 435-468.
