According to one of the most successful psychological  approaches  
today, terror management theory, this is erroneous. The  'instinct' is  
always present, but it is suppressed from awareness by  cultural myths:
Sheesh. I said "at most times in modern conditions..." So it's worth
telling me that the instinct isn't absent, just suppressed? 
 
I think David's heart is in the right place, but sometimes!
