Subject: migration for cryonics

The thread about migration spread over to the CI "members only" list where it
attracted a lot of further discussion.

In light of the
increasing unreliability of oil supplies in the current era, however caused,
I recommend that all overseas cryonicists get to the U.S. or Canada somehow
and figure out a way to stay indefinitely in either country, even if you
have to do so illegally.

and variants attracted comments from several members that breaking the law is no
way to get cryopreserved and indeed may also endanger those trying to help you.
Also last minute "vacations" with a view to perishing whilst in the USA were
not considered feasible as a plan of action, although some had achieved this.
Migration to the USA was also considered well nigh impossible unless you are
wealthy enough to buy citizenship in some way, such as businessmen like Rupert
Murdoch or successful show business personalities.

The fact that many existing US citizens may well have grandfathers who were born
in Europe and simply got on a sailing ship and sailed across the Atlantic to a
new life may have made them think it is as easy today. Even if it was easy,
there are lots of other issues. Cryonics is not certain to work either for
anyone or for specified individuals. It is one thing turning up as a stranger in
a strange land if obliteration is the only alternative, quite another if you
have voluntarily discarded what will turn out to be the only life and the only
friends you are going to have.

Recent news stories in the UK about migration highlight the fact that indigenous
people in any country resent migrants, and this is reflected in legislation.
Mark Plus is very understandable in wanting to welcome Europeans with an
interest in cryonics, but most of his neighbours will not, especially if they
don't speak English particularly well. People who oppose immigration may well be
bigots, but they do exist in very large numbers and they all do have votes.
