X-Message-Number: 32752 From: David Stodolsky <> Subject: Effects of the Social Environment on Health Date: Sun, 8 Aug 2010 11:45:08 +0200 Effects of the Social Environment on Health: Measurement, Methods and Mechanisms (R01) RFA-DA-11-003 http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-DA-11-003.html Executive Summary Purpose. This FOA, issued as part of the NIH Basic Behavioral and Social Science Opportunity Network (OppNet), solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to investigate structural, behavioral, sociocultural, environmental, cognitive, emotional, and/or biological mechanisms through which the social environment affects health outcomes. To address this objective, applicants should propose research studies that will: (1) deepen our understanding of which aspects of social environments affect health outcomes for women and men at different stages of the lifecourse and in different social, economic, geographic, racial and ethnic sub-populations; (2) lead to a clearer understanding of mechanisms through which social environments have such effects; or (3) improve measurement methods and/or contribute to advances in analytic methods used in the study of social environments and health. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the R01 award mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NIH will commit approximately $5 million to this funding initiative in 2011, allowing the support of 8-9 new R01 applications, for a total of approximately $24 million over the next 5 years. Budget and Project Period. Applications may request budgets with direct costs up to $500,000 per year and time periods up to five years in duration. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. Application Research Strategy Length: The R01 Research Strategy section may not exceed 12 pages, including tables, graphs, figures, diagrams, and charts. See Table of Page Limits<http://enhancing-peer-review.nih.gov/page_limits.html>. Eligible Institutions/Organizations. Institutions/organizations listed in Section III, 1.A.<http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-DA-11-003.html#SectionIII1A> are eligible to apply. Eligible Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs). Individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research are invited to work with their institution/ organization to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH support. Number of PDs/PIs. More than one PD/PI (i.e., multiple PDs/PIs) may be designated on the application. Number of Applications. Applicants may submit more than one application, provided each application is scientifically distinct. Resubmissions. Resubmission applications are not permitted in response to this FOA. Renewals. Renewal applications are not permitted in response to this FOA. Special Date(s). This FOA uses non-standard due dates. See Receipt, Review and Anticipated Start Dates<http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-DA-11-003.html#KeyDates>. Application Materials. See Section IV.1<http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-DA-11-003.html#SectionIV1> for application materials. General Information.
