X-Message-Number: 3416 Date: Wed, 16 Nov 94 23:58 EST From: David Brandt-Erichsen <> Subject: CRYONICS Measure 16 and autopsy I received by private email the question "Can we conclude that we can avoid autopsy with Oregon Measure 16?" I would like to post my reply. I have heard no legal opinions, but I think Measure 16 would avoid autopsy simply because the cause of death would clearly be known: the patient is both terminally ill with a previously diagnosed condition, and has legally taken a prescription of a known lethal medication. Also, it is not legally considered suicide or an assisted suicide (which means, among other things, that insurance companies cannot deny payment on this ground). The problem is that coroners have power and can always cause trouble if they don't like you or what you are doing, so this needs to be checked out and dealt with in advance.
