>From Allen Lopp for Cryonics E-Mail List (05/24/91):

I am saddened that Art Quaife's way of announcing TT's recent financial
windfall has once again precipitated ill-will between ACS/TT supporters
and Alcor supporters. Furthermore, I am saddened that in the midst of
his good fortune Art still feels it is necessary to take pot-shots at
others. I thought that relations between ACS/TT and Alcor might improve
to the point that we could at least stand the sight of each other
occasionally, but apparently that is too much to hope for. Thank you,
Art, for urinating in the jacuzzi once again. Now that the jucuzzi is
full of everyone's urine, I might as well pee in it too ...

For the most part, the responses of my fellow Alcorians may have been
harsh at times, but very little was said that I can't wholeheartedly
endorse. This includes Mike Darwin and Brian Wowk. I am sorry that we
must waste our time in such bickering, but I thank all those who took
the time to write, especially those whose writings were highly factual
and carefully documented.

Of all the cuts that Art offered, the one I resent the most is the
statement "The fewer attorneys you need, the better you are doing."
The obvious implication is that TT is doing better than Alcor because
Alcor has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent years
defending their members from abusive public officials and in defending
the rights of its members---and ACS members and TT clients, as
well---to select and to accomplish cryonic suspension for themselves.
Art, you really do have some nerve to make such a remark! You benefit
from our work and then ridicule us for doing it! The unrealistic
bragging and other distortions I have come to expect of you, but for
this I am truly appalled!

As for the "publicity disaster" of the Dora Kent episode, I can only
say this: Never have I been more proud to be an Alcorian than I was
when I saw how our leadership could maintain their stamina, courage,
values, and integrity through such an onslaught of distorted journalism
and governmental malfeasance. I may at times continue to question their
wisdom, but I shall never again doubt their toughness. I will be kind
enough not to speculate on what I expect would happen to TT in a
similar crisis.

It is not a mystery to me why the management of Cryomedical Sciences
was willing to pay such huge sums to buy back stock from TT and TT
researchers. As the public becomes ever more aware of the dangers of
blood transfusion, the blood substitute market has multi-billion-dollar
potential immediately ahead of it. My supposition is that Cryomedical
Sciences did not want this potential threatened by the involvement of
people associated with cryonics generally, and specifically scientists
who have repeatedly distorted, overpraised and misrepresented their
work to the press and the public. Regardless of how many PhD's these
scientists have, the Cryomedical Sciences investors knew the
credibility of their company wasn't worth horse do-do as long as they
had them on board.

These transactions are far from being a victory for cryonicists or
something we should feel JOY over. Instead, the enormity of those
checks are testament to how desparately Cryomedical Sciences wanted to
be rid of the likes of TT and Paul Segall and all. I extend the
remaining investors in Cryomedical Sciences best wishes in their
efforts to market actual products that save people's lives, and I
applaud their business savvy: They may have signed some big checks
lately, but they got one hell of a bargain.

Very truly yours,

Allen J. Lopp
