Subject: SCI. CRYONICS Pichugin report

Dr. Pichugin has e-mailed us his review-report of the sheep head work,
including some data and comments not previously provided. This will be
published in the April issue of THE IMMORTALIST, mailed around mid-March.
Meanwhile, we are bringing a copy to Phoenix next week for Alcor, and will
mail copies to BioPreservation, BioTime, ACS, and Thomas Donaldson.

We don't yet have the last photos (second sheep head), but we are having
copies made of the complete set of glossies of the first head
(about 100 photos) and will bring a set to Alcor and mail a set to
BioPreservation, BioTime, and Greg Fahy. Other interested/competent people
may request a set.

Dr. Pichugin's main conclusions, as I interpret his comments, are that
(1) Very slow cooling/rewarming (to liquid nitrogen temperature and back up
to room temperature), as done by the Cryonics Institute, especially in
critical ranges, is sufficient and probably necessary to avoid cracking; (2)
CI methods gave excellent histological preservation and generally good
ultrastructural preservation; (3) Several further experiments suggest
themselves to answer questions and improve the procedure. (The Cryonics
Institute and the Immortalist Society plan to fund these projects, as far as
our resources permit.)

Dr. Pichugin also commented that his review of the literature indicates that
the sheep head work done by himself and Prof. Zhegunov, and the previous work
(less carefully documented) done
on CI premises by Andy Zawacki and myself, constitute useful contributions to
cryobiology.
