X-Message-Number: 3950 Date: 04 Mar 95 16:33:06 EST From: Mike Darwin <> Subject: CRYONICS: Suda's work Thomas Donaldson and Mike Price have both asked for copies of Suda's unpublished work. Here is how you may possibly obtain it: 1) When I left Alcor I left many personal and semi-personal items; (I also took many with me). In many instances it was difficult to sort out exactly what should be removed and what should retained by Alcor. I was given a fair amount of latitude at the time to make these decisions. In many instances I decided to leave material, removal of which would have, in my opinion, caused a break in the continuity of the records of Alcor where such was unnecessary. (By way of example: I received many letters of a personal nature which bore on cryonics business, or of a professional nature which were directed to me. I left all such material at Alcor. I counted on being able to get copies of such material with relative ease as it was needed for memoirs, scientific issues, etc. My financial position at that time was such that copying all this material would have been impossible -- leaving aside any consideration of the TIME it would have taken. Unfortunately, getting access to any material at Alcor has proved to be impossible in almost all cases, except by the most circuitous routes. I bring this up because the copy of the Suda data which I had requested is in Alcor's posession; it would not be possible for me to get this (based on my past experience) in any straightforward way. What I am suggesting here is that you (Thomas, Mike or others) ask Alcor for a copy. I bring up the likely problems with getting this data because I would like to ask a favor of both of you if you get it; please supply me with a copy, and any translations or summaries you are able to get. (And no, I do not believe this would be a problem with Alcor as long as they are not dealing directly with me). 2) Greg Fahy has a copy of this material as well. However, he is extremely busy and getting it from him (in practice) would probably be just as hard as getting it from Alcor. However, you might try, and again, since you are not frequently bombarding him with requests for this or that (as I am) you may have better luck. (In other words, I try to triage my requests and asking him to copy 1-2 inches of unreadable (by me) Japanese manuscripts is pretty far down on both his and my lists of priority. What I DO have is copies of some (but not all) of Suda's slides. These I will be happy to copy at cost (about $1.50 per slide) plus postage. I believe I have about 1/2 dozen or so. Similarly, the slides of EM and light microscopy on frozen thawed cats from the mid-1980's work are available at cost to any (small, i.e. 2-3) people who want them ( if I get too many requests I will have to start charging for time, which will be costly; probably a 100% mark-up). I have already provided Bob Ettinger with copies of these slides. There are about 80 slides. The presentation which accompanies these slides must be obtained either through Alcor or Fred and Linda Chamberlain: I do not have and cannot get access to these materials for you, and in any event do not hold copyright. I suggest viewing this presentation to anyone seriously interested in cryoinjury of the CNS not only because of the results, but because I believe the verbal exposition of the caveats accompanying them is very relevant. The presentation, as I recall, was about 1-2 hours long. The paper documenting the techniques used has already been posted to CryoNet and can be retrieved at will.
