X-Message-Number: 3991 Date: 11 Mar 95 20:44:24 EST From: Mike Darwin <> Subject: CRYONICS: Alcor and Suda's manuscript Steve Bridge has written an explanatory post about Alcor and me (Mike Darwin). This was nice of him, reasonable, and reasonably accurate. I am sure there are good reasons for hard feelings on both sides; such is ually inevitable in such breaks. I did not mean my statements to be accusatoery or to put Alcor on the defensive; it was just a simple statement of fact and one that was needed since I am frequently asked for material I no longer have access to. As to the issue of patient records: that is deep issue and one which is not as simple as a request for nonconfifential material. The funny thing is that II already HAVE access to much of the most sensitive records on every case in questions (photos for instance and some full case raw data) and I have, I believe, an excellent reputation for not breaking the confidentiality of those patient's whose case reports I've completed. Furthermore, leaving me out of it altogether, there is broader issue of GENERAL access to case reports/raw data so long as confidentiality is protected within reason. Again, a complex problem not easily amenable to discussion when both sides are polarized; certainly nothing I am interested in pursuing any further here. More to the point, and the real reason for this post: In speaking with Greg a few days ago I learned that not only does he have the Suda orginals (as I thought) but that he has a pidgin english translation of them done by two of his Japanese colleagues. He is interested in contacting Suda and obtaining permission from him (Greg) to do a more complete translation and to publish the manuscript. Greg has indicated that he is not willing to take the trouble to copy all this material for me at this time, but did allow, when questioned, that he MIGHT do it if others had 1) enough interest and 2) good reasons for him using his time in this fashion. Thus, the "heat" is off Alcor to some extent. If you can get Greg to cut loose with them, then you are in business. In fact, if you succeed, simply have him send the material to me and I will handle the business of duplicating and sending it to up to 5 other people at no charge (this should include EVERYONE with a serious interest). In case Greg cannot find time here is where I last saw the manuscript at Alcor: In the old Doherty Street building there was a bank of filing cabinets in the central hall. The manuscript was with some other "masters" of reprints in the bottom drawer of one of the middle, black filing cabinets. That's about all the help I can be to locating it; and I sympathize with the problem of trying to find things after a move!!!! We have moved twice to Alcor's once and I lost a number of manuscripts and papers; the disappearance of which I have no explanation for. Remind me never to hire a doctor or lawyer in the midst of an emergency, who is about to move offices.... My thanks to Steve for his expressed willingness to send along the manuscript if/when he finds it. Meantime, bug Greg if you dare.
