X-Message-Number: 4361 From: Date: Sat, 6 May 1995 14:54:44 -0400 Subject: SCI. CRYONICS Ukrainian research Dr. Yuri Pichugin and Dr. Gennadi Zhegunov in the Ukraine have passed some temporary obstacles and are pressing forward again in their work on evaluation and improvement of cryonic suspension methods. We have only a preliminary report of the latest work, but it includes: 1. Rabbit brain pieces have been frozen to - 90 C, thawed, and glycerol washed out, and then shown "bioelectric activity in culture of reanimated brain slices." (Control pieces did not bear freezing even down to - 10 C.) They regard this as indirect confirmation of Suda's work, and are proceeding to the - 196 C phase. 2. They have succeeded in making arrangements for the use of human brain tissue in future experiments. (This apparently involved considerable discussion or negotiation.) 3. They are studying Mike Darwin's and Greg Fahy's evaluation of previous work, duplicating the Cryonics Institute sheep head experiments, and will do their own evaluation of Darwin's/Leaf's/Hixon's cat brain work. I would prefer not to publicize these until a consensus can be reached on the correct interpretation(s), or until all sides have a firm opinion in light of all the other opinions. Details will appear in THE IMMORTALIST from time to time. Robert Ettinger Cryonics Institute Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=4361
