               Subject: DuCharme book

Bob Ettinger comments, mostly favorably, on Wes Du Charme's new book:
*BECOMING IMMORTAL: Nanotechnology, You, and the Demise of Death.*

Alcor will be offering this book for sale soon, at $20.00 (postage
included). We will also be sending a special mailing to 5,000 people who
have asked us for information during the past two years, but who have
neither signed up for suspension nor subscribed to CRYONICS magazine. The
mailing will advertise the book as being for sale, plus promote Alcor
membership and subscriptions to CRYONICS.

While I agree with Bob that the book has little new for experienced
cryonicists, I think it is an excellent and persuasive introduction to
cryonics, nanotechnology, and immortalism for people who have had less
exposure to these ideas. Therefore, I think it would be a fine gift for
your parents, your brother-in-law, your boss, your local newspaper or
library, your local state representative, or anyone else more "average"
than most of us are. And I think it is very possible that it would be a
good start for the students and more casually interested people who write
for information.

Most of the cryonics examples (paperwork requirements, procedures,
etc.) in the book are drawn from Alcor's information; but detailed
information for all the cryonics organizations are given in the appendix.

Bob notes that:

>Since the book is self-published, it seems the
>author couldn't find a commercial publisher for another book on
>cryonics/immortalism.

True enough; but Wes hopes to find enough of a market out there by
self publishing to interest a commercial publisher ina later version. I
am impressed that he felt strongly enough about these issues to go forward
with self-publishing.

>There is no foreword by anyone, and no jacket encomium by anyone except
>Alcor President Steve Bridge (no offense, Steve, but you're not as famous
>as Madonna)

Hey, I'm not even as famous as Bob Ettinger (grin); but I AM more
famous than Wes Du Charme, so I get to be on the jacket. Besides, his
printing deadline was drawing near.
