X-Message-Number: 4854 From: (Chris Palmer) Subject: Aug95 Mtg Mins - Bay Area Cryonics Group Date: Thu, 7 Sep 1995 10:22:49 -0700 (PDT) Forwarded for Jay Carlisle: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Northern California / Bay Area Cryonics Group August 13th, 1995, Sunday @ 1 p.m. at the Offices of the American Cryonics Society (ACS) at 165 Gibralter Court in Sunnyvale, California attendees: Naomi Reynolds, Jay Carlisle, Chris Palmer Jr., Keith Henson, Ralph Merkle, Carol Shaw, Dan Zuras, David Harris, William Rowan, Joe Tennant, Hara Ra, Leonard Zubkoff, Jim Yount, Annie Yount Kinneta Watson, Martin Nemko, John Galt, Kinneta's Mother, Terry Bourgess, Tad Hogg, Kinneta's male friend 1) World Wide Web and internet discussed. Problems some groups are having thereon mentioned by Ralph and Keith including recent government crack- downs on free expression through raids etc... Others benefit from controversy: unify groups against attackers and raise level of public knowledge and interest. 2) Carol gives Jay July meeting minute corrections. Jay notes that many spelling problems are result of poor scanner reading as the original typed minutes do not show these problems. Noted however that "received", "Candlestick", and "Athiests" had letters out of order on both copies. Those wishing to get correct postal copies always have that option. 3) Next meeting is Sunday, September 10th, 1995 at 4 p.m. at Jay's at 1041 Norton Street, San Mateo, California--follow signs along driveway to the back. Ralph will chair this Intro. talk meeting, so bring new blood! 4) Jim Yount of ACS gives tour of facility. PIB (Portable Ice Bath) and Gurney and suspension equipment all shown. Jim makes clear the unilateral availability of this equipment for use in emergencies. 5) Jim invites trained and untrained people interested in suspension volunteering to work with ACS team mutually for training and standby purposes. Jay volunteers, others encouraged to follow. Practice set-up sessions likely. 6) Jim and Keith note that a suspension whole body blood washout is possible with ACS but that perfusion is unlikely as more equipment is probably needed. 7) Recent suspension problem in California area in getting a hospital to issue death certificate caused long delay in ability to issue travel permits to ship patient body out of state. 8) ACS has 700 sq. ft available= 500 office + 200 storage of variable form plus more available at about 45› per sq. ft. more. 9) ACS is averaging about 2 suspensions per year which equals approximately Alcor annual. With about 100 Alcor and about 50 ACS members in Bay Area, ACS is still more likely to have suspensions due to slightly older patient base. 10) ACS as back-up organization seems generally acceptable but devil seems to be in details. Alcor tending toward conservative approach to joint nonprofit cooperative ventures. ACS willingness to consider acting as a buffer corp. to Alcor for perfusion/suspension services is noted. 11) Florida suspension facility established by rich person who subsidizes rent for Alcor. Hara opens talks with Keith on similar joint facility idea. 12) Zoning laws at ACS facility have "no prohibition on" cryonics, as per the unofficial response Jim recieved from the city when inquired thereabout. 13) Keith notes Alcor liability and standards maintainance concerns and will work on joint facility proposal. 14) Alcor prefers ACS members to convert fully to Alcor members if a merger were to occur. Alcor has not seemed to address willingness to maintain funding of ACS's committments as required by law and thus prevents talks from moving further. 15) Short mention of joint transport vehicle mentioned. Jones Mortuary is ACS contracted for transport and Jim has a truck for use too. Joint van or stationwagon would be best. 16) No contact with Russel Whittaker reported by many people who have tried via E-Mail, post service, and phone. June meeting minutes still held by him. 17) Potluck follows. 1:18 pm-2:58 p.m. by Chairman Keith Henson and ACS Pres. Jim Yount. Respectfully submitted, Secretary Jay M Carlisle III LATE NOTE: ACS is willing to set up auxiliary trust mechanisms for cryonicists; contact Jim Yount. Jim also has life insurance available or referals. FINAL NOTE: The officers and members of the Northern California/Bay Area Cryonics Group wish to extend their full appreciation and warmest thanks to the generous and hospitable people of the American Cryonics Society for holding this meeting at their offices and for their always excellent work. We all hope to work together very closely in the future. ACS can be contacted at post box #509 in Sunnyvale or at 1-408-734-4200 and is a nonprofit organization accepting volunteers and members.
