Subject: CryoNet Feature #26

Top News of Nov. 18, 2095:
Patients who apparently recovered successfully from cryopreservation
this year, using the KQB recovery software, today have discovered that
they all suffer from the same curious ailment. Even though their
memories are almost entirely intact, none of them can recall any number
  that includes the digits "26".

News of Nov. 18, 1995:
Doug Skrecky, frequent contributor to the CryoNet mailing list, recently
discovered that every instance of "26" in his postings has mysteriously
disappeared. Investigation has traced these deletions to a bug in the
port of the "KQB" CryoNet software to c2.org (cryonet.org) almost a
year ago. Experts conclude that this was a typical error made by C
programmers writing their first Perl program:
      $ctrlz = 0x1a; # CTRL-Z
      s/$ctrlz//g; # remove any CTRL-Z (DOS end-of-file character)
Rather than removing all DOS end-of-file characters (to prevent DOS EOFs
in the middle of CryoNet digests) this program fragment removes all
instances of "26" in the text. (CTRL-Z is ASCII character 0x1a, which
is "26" decimal.) KQB now has learned about the "pack" function in Perl
  and has corrected the software.

Seriously, my apologies for removing "26" from all your postings this year!
It is curious that this has been happening so long and had never before
been noticed.

PS: To help make amends, I have appended below all the "26"'s that have
been deleted and invite you to insert them back into their proper
    places in the archives:
