X-Message-Number: 5364 Date: Thu, 7 Dec 1995 09:44:09 -0800 (PST) From: Doug Skrecky <> Subject: soy & depression Like Mike Darwin and Steve Harris I have been impressed by the lifespan enhancing benefits of soy protein that have been documented. The temptation to overindulge is there for members of the life extension movement. Unfortunately excessive protein intake has a significant mood lowering side effect. (Physiology & Behaviour 561-569 Vol.39 1987) Soy is worse than milk casein in this regard. (Physiology & Behaviour 1-5 Vol.42 1988) The depressant effect of protein intake appears to derive from a lowering of brain tyrosine levels. (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 1912-1922 Vol.32 1979) Supplemental tyrosine has in turn been used in the treatment of depression. (Journal of Psychiatric Research 175-180 Vol.17 No.2 1982/83) I would like to suggest therefore that soy protein consumption be limited.
