I appreciate the kind words Brian Wowk had to say about me in that
message, so it's really hard to disagree with him. :-) But I also
must apologize for forwarding Brian M. Delaney's message to the
CryoNet mailing list without any explanation of the history behind
his proposal. (My excuse: I was too busy doing other things,
such as working with Brian Wowk on the CryoCare web page!)
Here is a summary of that history:

The sci.cryonics news group was created in July 1992, almost 3 1/2
years ago. At that time there was no sci.life-extension news group
or any other satisfactory place to put a cryonics news group.
If there had been, we would have created sci.life-extension.cryonics
or sci.xxx.cryonics (for some appropriate "xxx") rather than sci.cryonics.
Other proposals, such as sci.med.cryonics, produced even more flames
than sci.cryonics, so we didn't pursue them. Some net.god(s) did not
like the name sci.cryonics, but there were enough votes to create
sci.cryonics anyway.

In 1993 Brian M. Delaney worked toward creating sci.life-extension and,
despite great popular support for the idea, met numerous unexpected
roadblocks from the net.god(s) that delayed creation of the news group.
It appeared in retrospect that the main source of those roadblocks was
ill will (previously unknown to me) dating from the creation of
sci.cryonics; the name space purists were determined not to let that
kind of thing happen again.

Brian Delaney's proposal to create sci.life-extension.cryonics provides
a logical home for the cryonics news group at a convenient time; as long
as people are thinking of spawning sci.life-extension sub-groups they
might as well put this proposal on the table, too. I also expect that
the net.god(s) and name space purists will look _kindly_ on renaming
sci.cryonics as sci.life-extension.cryonics. Whether or not it makes
any difference what the net.god(s) think is another matter.
Vote your conscience.

PS: I didn't put "SCI.CRYONICS" in the subject line of this message
because I plan to crosspost manually it to news.groups, sci.cryonics,
and sci.life-extension. The only news group discussion that "counts"
in creation of news groups is the one in news.groups.
