X-Message-Number: 5630 From: Brian Wowk <> Date: Thu, 18 Jan 1996 23:50:44 -0600 Subject: Cryonics in Australia Regarding Robert Horley's recent question about cryonics in Australia: Steve Bridge summed things up quite well. In other words, "Ask not what your cryonics organization can do for you, but rather what you can do for your cryonics organization in your country." Local response is the essence of the problem. Even if there were a dozen stabilization teams in the U.S. willing to leave at a moment's notice, that still would not be sufficient for trans-oceanic cryonics. Australians must do what all overseas cryonicists must do: * Establish a local group of interested people. * Purchase equipment and supplies. * Come to the U.S. for training. Apparently the Cryonics Society of Australia has made some progress toward these goals. CryoCare management has been struggling with the question of overseas signups for the past year. On the one hand, we are reluctant to sign people up if we are not confident we can provide them with good service. On the other hand, we are also aware that bad service is better than no service in cryonics. We have decided for the time being to not actively promote our service outside the U.S. and Canada. We will, however, not turn away overseas residents who want to sign up. We will sign up overseas residents on the understanding that our ability to serve them will strongly depend on the local help that is available. CryoCare does not yet have any Australian members. If the Cryonics Society of Austalia (like Alcor UK) is strongly Alcor-oriented, it might be a good idea for Australians to sign up with Alcor. Alternatively, if the Cryonics Society of Australia is more open to diversity, I think CryoCare and BioPreservation would have much to offer Australians in terms of new technology (like drugs allowing recovery from 10 minutes of warm cardiac arrest, methods of cooling at 1'C per minute without cardio- pulmonary bypass, and forthcoming advances in brain cryopreservation technology). Cryonics outside North America is a new frontier. It is a frontier that will be conquered by those with the foresight and initiative recreate cryonics from the ground up. *************************************************************************** Brian Wowk CryoCare Foundation 1-800-TOP-CARE President Your Gateway to the Future http://www.cryocare.org/cryocare/ Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=5630
